Reading week unity task

Image
Screenshot of my C# code   In this weeks Unity tutorial I continued to work on the prototype that I began last week and I also began to work on another prototype where I added music and sound effects to the prototype. In the first task I added new elements to my game from last week. I used C# to create a new way of spawning the animals, instead of spawning them by using the S key I instead used C# to spawn them by using a timer. Every few seconds an animal will spawn in the game. In this tutorial I also learned to add collision to the animals in the game so they will react when they collide with each other. In the second unity tutorial I learned about adding music and sound effects to the games that I create. This will be incredibly beneficial to me when I am creating my own game because of how important music and sound effects are to setting a mood in a game.

Vision statement

Introduction ' cat game ' is a cat collecting simulator game for Switch and PC that blends the cat collecting of ' Neko Atsume ' with the friendship building of ' Animal Crossing '. Cat Game is set in the home of your choice where you will adopt, befriend and connect with a variety of cats. Description In Cat Game you move into your dream home and fill it with as many cats as possible. You first pick a home from a collection of starters, later on in the game you will have the opportunity to relocate to a larger home to fit more of your new found friends. You can decorate your home to your liking but remember that certain cats have specific preferences and if you don't meet them you'll be in for a nasty surprise.  Example of the home decoration and cat collection seen in Neko Atsume link Cats can be adopted at your local adoption center. Initially you can only adopt one cat but as your bond grows so too can your cat collection. You can adopt a variety

Week 5 unity tutorial

Image
Screenshot of my prototype  This weeks unity tutorial involved me starting a new project. This project focuses on a game with a more defined goal. My first prototype was a very basic game with no win or lose state and very minimal features. This project is more advanced and it better represents a finished game. This tutorial began by covering basic player movement which includes moving left, right, forward and backwards while also insuring that the player character stayed within the bounds of the playable space in the game. I then learned how to make the player character throw the piece of food using the spacebar, I did this by using a C# script. I then went onto learn how to make the animals spawn when the S key is pressed and to then change the perspective of the camera when the animals spawn in.

Game idea research

Image
Researching ideas for my game The game idea that I'm focusing on in this post is my idea of a cat simulator. Based on some of the feedback I've received from my classmates I believe that this would be a very interesting and entertaining game. Screenshot of neko atsume link The first idea for one of the possible game mechanics for my game is to include a feature where you can ' collect ' different cats. I imagine this being like the cat collection feature in the game  Neko Atsume . This feature would allow for me to include a range of different kinds of cats with different personalities, likes and dislikes. This would keep the game fresh on repeat playthroughs. I would implement this by having different kinds of cats appear periodically in the adoption center. Another possible mechanic I would like to include would be a feature where you can develop relationships with the cats you adopt. I imagine this being similar to the friendship mechanic in animal crossing where y

Unity tutorial 2

Image
An example of my C# code  In this weeks unity tutorial I added more advanced techniques to my unity project. I learned how to make my vehicle move from left to right in addition to moving forward. I did this by adding more advanced C# code to my project. I also learned how to adjust the speed of the vehicle by using C# code. This more advanced C# code has allowed me to make my project a much more functional game and more entertaining to play because of that. These more advanced techniques will benefit me when I go onto developing my own game.

Brainstorming topics for my game

Image
In this blog post I intend on running through some possible ideas for the game that I am going to create. I will discuss where I got the inspiration for the game from, my ideas for the art style and mechanics I would like to include. Idea 1- Cat simulator My cat Ham, the inspiration for my cat sim My first idea is for a Nintendogs style game where you keep and care for cats. Another big part of why I would want to make a game in this style is that I recently got a kitten and I would like to share this experience with others. Ideally I would like this game to be a relaxing and more casual game. I would like the art style to be relatively simple, in recent years there has been a revival of cell shading and other less detailed art styles in games and I believe that this kind of style would suit a game like this. In terms of mechanics in this game I would like to include ways to play with your cat, feed them, bathe them and I would like to add some unique cats with very distinct personali

Unity tutorial 1

Image
A screenshot of my unity project  This week I began my first unity tutorial, I had no previous experience working in this program so this was a new experience for me. In this tutorial I learned how to create a 3D engine and build the beginnings of a 3D game where you control a car. This tutorial covers the basic elements of unity like setting up and editing a C# script, adding scripts to an asset, controlling a camera and other basic elements of unity. This tutorial really helped me in getting a grip of unity and learning more about the program. I'm looking forward to continue with my unity tutorials and to go onto using the skills and tips I learned in these tutorials when I go onto developing my game

Game design

Image
While reading these three articles about game design and how the process of game design works I learned a lot about the work that goes into creating a game. Game design link One of the most significant elements that was repeated throughout the three articles is the idea of ' ideation '. In all three articles there are examples of how game designers use brainstorming and other forms of ideation in order to develop their ideas. Idea development is incredibly important as it leads to creating interesting and innovative games.  In addition to a focus on ideation there was a significant focus in these articles on the idea of  collaboration  within game design. The second article has a section focusing on direct examples from game designers and how they work on creating interesting ideas for game design. According to this article most of the game designers they spoke to first work on ideas by themselves before bringing them to others for feedback. This way of working on developing id

Time management strategies

Image
The two articles that I read on time management strategies were ' Increase your creative output with 14 time management tips just for creatives ' by Amanda Oliver and ' How to beat procrastination ' by Caroline Webb. The first article focuses on time management skills for creative people. As someone who would consider themselves a creative and more visual person I found a lot of the advice in this article very useful. Rather than focusing on lists, deadlines and rigid schedules this article focuses on working in a way that suits you the best. Point 3 focuses on working at a time that suits you best which I found helpful as I find that when I have to do larder tasks I perform better at them later in the day. I found the 6th point very helpful, this point focuses on doing the ' worst ' thing first. I find that when I have multiple tasks to do I find myself leaving the task I would enjoy the least or find the hardest to the end. This article suggests that instead

Technology used in multimedia development

Image
In terms of the programs that we are using for this module I have at least heard about all of them, I have previous experience using blogger and editing photos. Although I have no personal experience working in Unity, I have a lot of friends who already do so I have heard a good bit about the program and I'm looking forward to learning it. I have had to run a blog for two modules last year but other than that I don't have much experience in working in this particular way. I'm looking forward to developing my skills in blogging further throughout this semester. Illustration of different types of technology

First impression of assignment overview

Image
My first impression of the assignments that I have to complete for this module is that they are very broad and offer a wide range of different experiences. Not only will I be updating my blog regularly but I will also be working on my project, doing reading tasks, working in unity and viewing other students blogs. I also appreciate that there is extra credit work offered, I like the option of being able to pull up my grade if I feel that I may be falling behind in some other area. This format is quite different to the format of my other modules but I think that this change will be good and will keep me more engaged in what I am doing as there is an element of choice.  Assignment stock image link
